WORK IN THE UK AS A NURSE

UK NMC REGISTRATION GUIDE FOR NURSES FROM GHANA OR TRAINED OUTSIDE OF THE EU/EEA

An abridged and a more concise version of this note is available here.

To practice in the UK as a nurse, you need to satisfy certain necessary requirements. It is for these reasons that Dreams Consult together with its partner agencies have decided to make information available to all nurses to take advantage of. This we believe will minimise the systemic exploitation of the ignorance of these innocent nurses and midwives by some unscrupulous agencies.

Registering with the NMC is your first step to working as a nurse in the UK. To help you through registration, we have put together this quick step-by-step guide for nurses trained in Ghana or any other country outside of the EU/EEA:

  • English language requirements – all applicants must show they can communicate clearly and effectively in English by undertaking the International English Language Test (IELTS) with a score of 7.0. NMC will verify the scores with the IELTS organisation. Clubbing two IELTS certificates obtained in the period of 6 months is allowed. In this case, the minimum acceptable score to be clubbed is 6.5. The NMC also accepts the Occupational English Test (OET) results.
  • Practice requirements – at the time of the application, the applicant must have practised as a registered nurse or midwife for at least 12 months (full time or the part-time equivalent) after qualifying. This post-registration experience must be relevant to the field of practice the applicant is applying for. If the applicant has not undertaken any duties as a registered nurse or midwife in the three years prior to making their application, they should contact NMC to discuss available options.
  • Registration requirements – applicants must hold a current registration or license without restriction with the licensing authority or registration body in the country in which they qualified or have been practising. NMC will require verification from that authority
  • Education requirements – applicants must have successfully completed at least 10 years of school education before starting a post-secondary education nursing or midwifery training which should be at least a three-year programme (diploma).
  • New applicants – applicants must complete an online self-assessment of their eligibility to apply before beginning the application process.

There are different fees for different stages of the application process:

  • Application for nursing/midwifery £140
  • Part 1 test of competence (CBT) £90
  • Part 2 test of competence (OSCE) £794
  • Admission onto our register £153

Total £1,177

  • Examinations– each professional field of nursing, including adult (general), children’s, learning disabilities, mental health and the midwifery profession, is examined by our NMC’s test of competence. Part one is a multiple-choice Computer Based Test (CBT), written in Ghana, and part two is a practical examination called an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), taken in the UK.
  • Assessment – applicants will need to provide the following evidence in order to complete an assessment:
    • – A valid passport. This same document must also be presented at the test centre.
    • – Birth certificate
    • – A qualification certificate for each qualification being submitted as part of the application
    • – Registration certificates from each jurisdiction where the applicant has practised and/or been registered
    • – Two employment references confirming the applicant’s post-registration practice of at least 12 months, their competence and character
    • – Verifications from all jurisdictions where the applicant practised or where the applicant has been previously registered
    • – Transcript of training for all relevant nursing or midwifery programmes completed by the applicant. These must be calculated in hours or be accompanied by a letter from the training institution with a key to how the credits translate to hours
    • – A good health declaration from the applicant’s general practitioner or the occupational health department at their place of work
    • – A police clearance certificate from all countries where the applicant has lived since the age of 18
  • Identification check – applicants are required to attend a face-to-face identification check at the NMC office in London. At the ID interview, you must produce the original versions of the documents you sent photocopies of. They will make final checks on your previous registration, and take a photograph for their records.
  • Final registration – once NMC has received notification that an applicant has successfully completed part two of the test of competence and the ID check, they will be invited to complete their final declaration and payment for registration online. Once both have been received, you will be sent your PIN (personal identification number), confirming that you are fully registered with the NMC. Your registration will then show up on the NMC register online.

UK IMMIGRATION PROCESSES

Applicants should be aware that they will be required to meet the full requirements of the UK’s immigration processes separately.

    1. That’s a great decision. Working abroad comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. It’s, therefore, not wrong when you choose to stay in Ghana over going to work in the UK.

    2. Am a Registered Nurse in Ghana, but I would be migrating to UK with my husband who is going to pursue his master degree .

Can I practice there when we eventually get there . ?

    1. You can start by writing the two exams so that by the time your pin is ready, you would have been ready enough to just leave to the UK.

        1. I am unable to get your question clearly. Kindly contact 0245444499 with your inquiry and we will gladly assist.

      1. Hi, I am a registered nurse with 5 years working experience before migrating to the UK. Is it possible to commence all registrations in the UK or I have to go back to Ghana and start all over again?

        1. You can start the process from the UK. Depending on the type of visa you hold now, you may either have to return to Ghana after you pass all the exams to apply for the tier 2 visa or change your status there. At the moment, due to COVID-19, it is possible to remain in the UK and change the status of all types of visas.

  1. I CURRENTLY WORK AS A NURSE IN GHANA AND I HAVE HAD FOUR YEARS WORK EXPERIENCE WORKING AS A NURSE AND I NOW WANT TO WORK AS A NURSE HERE AND I PROMISE TO EXTEND MY HARD WORK IF I AM BEING APPLIED. THANK YOU.

  2. Please I recently completed my diploma in midwifery course am waiting for my result.. when can I write the exams too.. how is the process concerning writing the exams than and can I write the exams during service period too.. thank you

    1. The certificates (IELTS and CBT) are valid for 2 years only and you need your Ghana NMV pin before you can work in the UK. If you are sure the pin will be ready before the IELTS and CBT certificate expires, then you can write them now.

  3. It so amazing 😍

Just completed three years diploma midwifery courses and waiting for my results

I understand one can write the exam whiles awaiting the pin

My problem is are payment involved in the processes

    Thanks Awu

    1. Good morning, pls what does it entail working in the UK, do you need to know someone there before, and can you go as a family if you meet the requirements?

  4. I read it from the internet recently that nurses from an English speaking countries or had their training in English can use their transcript instead of IELTS. Please how true is this?

    1. There hasn’t been any change in the English language requirement. The evidence 2 is still the same. The proposal that will go under consideration on the 27th of this month is to have the five qualification cap removed. As Ghanaians do not qualify under that evidence, any review of the year limitation won’t have any effect on our nurses. Here is the proposal https://www.nmc.org.uk/news/news-and-updates/statement-on-proposed-changes-to-readmission-and-english-language-requirements/ and here is the evidence 2 https://www.nmc.org.uk/registration/joining-the-register/english-language-requirements/trained-english/

    1. We at Dreams Consult are not aware of any opportunity for professionals in this category. As and when we get to know about one, we shall publish it on our website. Thank you.

    1. Nursing jobs are available all over the UK. You will be given the job offer here in Ghana after passing the job interview even before you travel. It is the employer that will apply the visa for you.

    1. You can start the process today by enrolling for the IELTS programme. Getting an IELTS certificate is the first step towards either of your dreams.

    1. You will need to sit again for the test if you want to use it for the UK or Ireland. It has, however, met the requirement of the US so you may want to consider.

    1. If you can raise the exams fees, then, you can go because that is the most important thing. At the moment, the exams fee is 1417 cedis. You won’t need more than 3000 cedis if you want to go to Ireland. For the UK, as there is no available sponsorship current, at least as we are aware of, you may need to raise about 10,000 cedis for it. I am not aware of any organisation that is willing to absorb that upfront for you to pay later.

    1. Yes and that is the process we have outlined in this article. We have got a couple of midwives who have made it through the process and that was why we delayed this article and published it just this year.

  13. Hello

Can you kindly help me with this dilemma

Assuming you’ve passed the exam and everything and you’re currently in the UK practicing as a nurse or midwife

Does your visa or will your visa apply to someone you’re planning on marrying, who is in Ghana at the moment ?

  14. Everything published was actually very logical.

But, what about this? what if you wrote a catchier title?
I mean, I don’t wish to tell you how to run your website, however
suppose you added a title that grabbed people’s attention? I
mean WORK IN THE UK AS A NURSE – Dreams Consult is kinda plain. You could look at Yahoo’s front page and see
how they create post headlines to get people to
open the links. You might add a video or a picture or two to get people excited about everything’ve
got to say. In my opinion, it might make your website a little livelier.

  15. Please I am a nurse but already here in the UK. I came with my husband who’s offering a postgraduate course at the University of Bradford. Do I have the chance to apply ?

    1. You will hardly get an agency to assist in the collection of your visa, however, employment process includes acquisition of visa.
